SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS

In cases where a breakage may cause injury to persons or damage to equipment, the user must take appropriate safety measures (such as fall protection, overload protection, etc.). Safe and trouble‐free operation of the load cells requires proper transportation, correct storage, assembly and mounting as well as careful operation and maintenance. It is essential to comply with the relevant accident prevention regulations. In particular you should take into account the limit loads quoted in the specifications. Use in accordance with the regulations HLC type load cells have been designed for weighing applications. Use for any additional purpose shall be deemed to be not in accordance with the regulations. To ensure safe operation, the load cells should only be used as described in the Mounting Instructions. It is also essential to observe the appropriate legal and safety regulations for the application concerned during use. The same applies to the use of accessories. The HLC load cells can be used as machine components (e.g. with tank weighing). Please note in these cases that, in order to provide a high sensitivity, the load cells have not been designed with the safety factors normally applied in machine design. The load cell is not a safety element within the meaning of its use in accordance with the regulations. The measuring signal processing electronics has to be designed in such a way that with a measuring signal failure no damages can occur.

General dangers due to non‐observance of the safety instructions

The HLC load cells correspond to the state of the art and are fail‐safe. The load cells can give rise to residual dangers if they are inappropriately installed and operated by untrained personnel. Everyone involved with the installation, commissioning, maintenance or repair of a load cell must have read and understood the Mounting Instructions and in particular the technical safety instructions.

Residual dangers

The scope of supply and performance of the load cells covers only a small part of weighing technology. In addition, equipment planners, installers and operators should plan, implement and respond to the safety engineering considerations of weighing technology in such a way as to minimize residual dangers. Prevailing regulations must be complied with at all times. There must be reference to the residual dangers connected with weighing technology

Environmental conditions

In the context of your application, please note that acids and all materials which release  (chlorine) ions will attack all grades of stainless steel and their welding seams. This mayresult in corrosion which can lead to the failure of the load cell. In such cases the operator must take appropriate safety measures. Prohibition of own conversions and modifications The load cells must not be modified from the design or safety engineering point of view except with our express agreement. Any modification shall exclude all liability on our part for any damage resulting therefrom.

Qualified personnel

These load cells are only to be installed by qualified personnel strictly in accordance with the specifications and with the safety rules and regulations which follow. It is also essential to observe the appropriate legal and safety regulations for the application concerned. The same applies to the use of accessories. Qualified personnel means persons entrusted with the installation, fitting, commissioning and operation of the product who possess the appropriate qualifications for their function.

Accident prevention

Although the specified maximum capacity in the destructive range is several times the full scale value, the relevant accident prevention regulations from the trade associations must be complied with. Take into consideration the values specified in particular in chapter 7 for

  • limit loads,
  • max. longitudinal forces,
  • max. transverse forces.

Option: Explosion proof version

  • Users must comply with all relevant erection regulations during installation.
  • The installation conditions listed in the certificate of conformity and/or type examination certificate must be complied with.

SCOPE OF SUPPLY

  • Load cell with connection cable, mounting instructions (for HLC)
  • Load cell with (M12x1) male connector, mounting instructions (for HLC-P)

MOUNTING

Please pay attention on the following points for the mounting of load cells:

  • Do not overload load cells, not even temporarily.
  • The mounting surface must be horizontal, flat across the entire surface, and absolutely clean. Dust, dirt, and other foreign matter should not collect such that they have a detrimental effect on the mobility of load cells, thus falsifying the measured value.
  • When mounting, or immediately after mounting, each load cell should be bridged by means of a twisted copper cable (e.g. EEK… by HBM = approx. 16 mm2). In this way, you prevent damage caused by welding currents.
  • Load cell grounding reduces the risk of load cell damage due to lightning.
  • In load cells with an additional outer braided wire over the cable (item no. K-HLCB2 with option 5, code 3R, 6R or 12R), this cable is only used for protection against increased mechanical stress (e.g. damage caused by gnawing rodents). To avoid accidental energization, the outer braided wire has to be connected to potential equalization at least once. This outer braid is not used to shield the load cell. The inner braid of the load cell cable is used for shielding

CAUTION

Never load in a direction opposite to the load direction specified (see arrow on the load introduction front of the load cell). This would cause measurement errors and the damage of the mounting bolts. If load direction is correct, the load cell output signal is positive.HBK-HLC-Ideal-Load-Cell-fig (7)

Load cells are to be clamped in tightly at the mounting bores – like a cantilever beam. Later, the load will be introduced at the other end. The following table contains all recommended bolts and torques:

Emax Thread size Tightening torque Base plate (h) Washers
≤2 t M12‐12.9 130 N×m 1) ≥20 mm DIN 433‐13‐300 HV‐A2
2.2 t M20‐10.9 400 N×m 1) ≥25 mm DIN 433‐21‐300 HV‐A2
4.4 t M20‐10.9 400 N×m 1) ≥25 mm DIN 433‐21‐300 HV‐A2
10 t M24‐10.9 900 N×m 1) ≥40 mm DIN 433‐25‐300HV‐A2

Standard value for the property class stated. For bolt design, please note the relevant information provided by bolt manufacturers.

Important

Missing washers and a base plate strength which is too low, cause most faults that occur during load cell use. In particular, this applies to the strength of the base plate which has a direct influence on the “Hysteresis error” stated in the Specifications

LOAD INTRODUCTION

Loads should act as precisely as possible in the load direction. Torsion moments, off‐centre loads, as well as transverse or lateral forces cause measurement errors and may damage the load cell permanently. Such interferences must be intercepted e.g. by stay rods or guide rollers, with these elements not being permitted to take up any load or force components. In order to minimize error interferences due to load introduction, HBM offers various proven load introductions for load cell types HLCB… (versions with counterbore + thread), depending on the mounting situation, see chapter 8.1 “Mounting accessories for HLC B”, page 18 The load cell type HLCA… (version with tapped through hole) is provided for use with threaded bolt and locknut. Depending on actual use, the threaded bolt can be screwed into the tapped through hole in both directions. The locknut will secure the threaded bolt on both surfaces. Please note the required locknut torques from 40 N⋅m … 54 N⋅m.

ELECTRICAL CONNECTION

Cable assignment

Load cells can be connected either to carrier‐frequency‐amplifiers or DC‐amplifiers. Load cells can be connected electrically in parallel by connecting up the same color wire ends of the load cell connection cables. The output signal will then be the mean value of the individual output signals.

CAUTION

In such cases, an overload situation on a single load cell cannot be detected by means of the output signal.

Wiring code 6‐wire circuitHBK-HLC-Ideal-Load-Cell-fig (8)

When connecting 6‐wire load cells to amplifiers in 4‐wire technique you must connect the wires blue to green and black to grey are to be connected up. The following deviations occur on unshortened cables (3 m):

  • Sensitivity (Cn) -0.2 %
  • TKC -0.01 % / 10 K

Wiring code 4‐wire circuit

Only applies to versions with 4‐wire connection cable.HBK-HLC-Ideal-Load-Cell-fig (9)

Cable extension

For extending cables, only use shielded low capacity measurement cables (measurement cables provided by HBM1) meet these requirements). Ensure that there is a perfect connection with the lowest possible transition resistance. If you use the 6‐wire circuit, you may neglect any interference by a change in the resistance of the extension cables. However, if you extend the cable using the 4‐wire technique, the characteristic value deviation can be removed by adjustment. Temperature influences will not be compensated. EMC

CAUTION

Electrical and magnetic fields often induce interference voltages in the measuring circuit. To ensure reliable measurement, however, the transducer must be able to transmit signal differences of a few μV to the analysis unit without interference. Planning the shielding design Due to the numerous application options and differing local constraints, we can only provide you with general information on correct connection. The shielding design suitable for your application must be planned locally by an appropriate specialist. HBM load cells with shielded, round cables are EMC-tested in accordance with the EU Directive and bear the CE mark. Voltage surges as per EN 61000-4-5 can give rise to deviations from the load cell’s specified accuracy. These surges in plants are caused by lightning strikes or switching operations in power circuits, for example, and disappear again when interference is no longer active. This is particularly evident with cables over 30 m long or if the equipment is used outdoors. Customers should take additional precautions in these cases.

Please note:

  • Connect the connecting cable shield all over the surface of the shielding electronics housing. When using several load cells, connect the shields all over the surface of the junction box (combination of transducer signals, e.g. type VKK2 from HBM). From there, connect the measurement cable for the electronics over the surface of the junction box and the shielding electronics housing.
  • The shield of the connecting cable must not be used for discharging potential differences within the system. You must therefore lay sufficiently dimensioned potential equalization lines to compensate for possible potential differences.
  • Use shielded low-capacitance measurement cables only (HBM cables fulfill these conditions).
  • Do not route measurement cables parallel to electric cables, especially power lines and control circuits. If this is not possible, protect the measurement cable, for example with steel conduits.
  • Avoid stray fields from transformers, motors and contact switches.
