INSTALLING BATTERIES

Open the battery compartment of the receiver and transmitter by pressing down the battery door latch. Insert two “AAA” batteries with correct polarity. Align the battery door and snap the latch back in place.

EZ-SYNC TECHNOLOGY

With both units on, sync the receiver with the transmitter by pressing and holding down the VOL/SYNC buttons for 2 seconds on both the transmitter and receiver. It does not matter what order.

SYNC LOSS ALARM

The receiver will begin silently flashing after loss of the synced connection for 60 seconds. The receiver will continue flashing silently for 3 minutes. In this time the units will attempt to re-sync with one another. This gives the receiver time to re-sync before notifying you, which makes the receiver more convenient to use when close to the receiver’s range limit. After 3 minutes, an audible alarm will sound on the receiver for 60 seconds to alert you that they will need to be re-synced.

SET UP THE UNITS

The SNS-500 comes with 2 waterproof 3″ long hybrid meat/bbq probes and 2 waterproof 6″ long hybrid probes.

  1. Insert probe jacks into any of the probe ports on the larger transmitter unit.
  2. Turn both units on in any order and sync the units per the previous instructions.
  3. Wait for the temperatures displayed on the transmitter to also appear of the receiver.

SET ALARM TEMPERATURES ON THE TRANSMITTER

Alarms for Probe 1 and 2 are set at the factory for monitoring a smoker with High of 250 F and Low of 220 F. Probes 3 and 4 are set at the factory to monitor a meat with High of 160 F and Low of 32 F (so the Low alarm alert is bypassed). After powering on, the units will not audibly alarm until the first time the minimum setpoint is exceeded, i.e., during “warm up.” The temperatures for each probe will flash, i.e., inaudible alarm, when temperatures are outside of the low and high setpoints.

To set audible alarm temperatures for each probe:

  1. Press PROBE 1,2,3 or 4 button and the probe temperature will flash for that probe and the square around the P# will also flash.
  2. Press that same button and the HIGH temperature alert will flash. PressDown or UP to LOWER or RAISE the high temperature alert.
  3. Press ALARM SET to lock the new high temperature alert in and then the low alert temperature alert will flash.
  4. PressDown or UP  to LOWER or RAISE the low temperature alert. (If the low alarm is not needed, press the probe button again to quickly set the low temperature to 32 F / 0 C.)
  5. Press ALARM SET to lock the new low alert temperature in. Nothing will be flashing. The alarm will automatically turn on for the programmed probe.
  6. Repeat for the other 3 probes.

Audible alarms may be silenced by pressing any button on the unit after the alarm sounds.
To enable/disable an audible alarm:

  1. Press the ALARM ON/OFF button to tum on the alerts for all probes. You will see this symbol – pairing button– in between the high and low temperature set points on the display.
  2. In ALARM mode press & hold the PROBE 1,2,3 or 4 button to disable the alarm for that probe ONLY.
  3. Pressing ALARM ON/OFF again will disable ALL of the probe alarms.
Note: Programmed alerts will be remembered when the device is turned off.

SET UP THE GRILL

  1. Insert 6″ food probe sensor into the center of thickest portion of the meat or food. Avoid touching bone or gristle.
  2. Pinch clip and attach clip to the grate. Insert the 3” bbq probe into the clip to monitor grill temperature. We recommend placing the probe one to two inches away from the meat and avoid sides of the bbq/grill for most accurate reading.
  3. Position the probe sensor wires so they will not contact any flames and they exit the grill without being pinched/ crushed by the cover.
  4. Stand/ hang the transmitter away from heat source of grill or any parts of the grill that are warm or hot to the touch.
DO NOT attach transmitter on closed grill cover or under the grill cover. The transmitter is waterproof for use in rain when all four probes are installed but should not be immersed in water.

HELPFUL HINTS

When placing probes to monitor ambient temperature within the bbq/grill, remember that temperature can vary across the grill surface area and also vertically in the bbq/grill.

If the receiver and the transmitter display LL.L or HH.H instead of the probe temperature, the probe has reached a temperature outside of its useful range. If the reading is HH.H remove the probe from the bbq/grill and wait for probe to reach room temperature. If you desire, cool your bbq/grill down by following the manufacturer’s instructions before attempting to reuse the probe to prevent damage. If LL.L is displayed while the probe is inserted into a piece of meat, it is likely the meat is below 32 F. You can give your meat time to warm up or remove the probe and let it come to room temperature. If LL.L or HH.H is still displayed, after taking these actions, it is likely the internal probe wire has shorted out either through moisture or heat damage.

Note on reading meat temperatures: If the temperature displayed seems to be reading too high or that the temperature seems to be increasing too quickly, check to make sure the probe tip is not poking outside through the food. Reposition the probe tip in the center of the thickest part of food. Avoid touching bones or heavy fat areas.

CAUTIONS

Always wear a heat resistant glove to touch the stainless steel probe sensors or wires during or just after cooking.
Do not touch with bare hands.
Keep the stainless steel probe sensors and wires away from children. Clean the stainless steel probes and dry thoroughly after each and every use.

The transmitter is water resistant when all 4 probes are installed but not water tight. Do not immerse in water while cooking or cleaning the unit.
Do not expose the plugs of the stainless steel probes or the plug in holes of the transmitter to water or any liquid.
This will result in a bad connection and/or faulty readings.
Do not expose the receiver or transmitter to direct heat or surface. Do not use stainless steel probes in microwave ovens.
Temperatures as low as 14 °F (-10 °C) and as high as 572 °F (300 °C) will be registered on the units.
LL.L will be displayed below 14°F and HH.H will be displayed above 572 °F. Do not use the stainless probe sensor above 572 °F. Doing so will deteriorate the wire.
Not intended for use by persons aged 12 and Under.
