Preparing the Coffee Maker – Before First Use

Unpack machine, clean all loose parts with warm water. Read instructions and familiarize yourself with all functions. Brew two carafes using only water (no ground coffee in filter) to clean internal parts of machine.

Setting the Clock

The coffee maker will beep when plugged in, the display (Fig. 2, I) will show “12:00 AM”. All icon lights will be off. Push and hold the hour button. The hours will advance. The left side of the display will show AM and PM. When the correct hour appears, release the button. Push and hold the minute button to set the minutes.
Attention: Adjust time according to Standard or Daylight Savings Time.

Making Coffee

Coffee makers produce hot water. Follow the sequence as described below to avoid possible accidents which may cause severe injuries and burns.

  1. Remove carafe from machine and fill with desired amount of water.
NOTE: Water will be absorbed during brewing process. The brewed coffee will be slightly less than markings on carafe.
  2. Open water container lid (Fig. 1, A) and pour water into the water tank. (Fig. 4) If you overfill the water tank, the carafe may overflow with hot coffee.
  3. Make sure the filter holder (Fig. 1, E) sits firmly in the filter holder housing.
Then place the GoldTone filter (Fig. 1, D) into the filter holder and ensure it fits correctly.
Note: A size 4 cone shaped paper filter can also be used instead of the GoldTone filter. Do not use a filter paper inside a GoldTone filter!
Caution: If the filter holder is not engaged correctly into the housing, the drip stop in the filter holder might not open during brewing. Hot water and grinds could overflow and leak from the machine.
Caution: When you push against the drip stop from the bottom, and the filter holder lifts up, re-insert the filter holder. Otherwise the drip stop will not open during brewing. Hot water could overflow from the filter causing injuries.
  4. Add medium coarse ground coffee into the GoldTone filter. Use approximately 1 level tablespoon of ground coffee per cup of coffee according to personal taste. Then close the water container lid. DO NOT exceed 14 level tablespoons of coffee in the filter.
  5. Make sure the lid sits properly on the glass carafe. Insert carafe into machine.
The inner part of the lid pushes the drip stop up, to let coffee brew through.
  6. Press ON/OFF button, the power icon light will illuminate and the appliance will begin brewing.
Caution: Never open the water container lid as long as coffee is brewing. Hot water could spill out causing burns. Wait until the brewing noise stops before lifting lid.
  7. The brewing process can be interrupted by pressing the ON/OFF button at any time during operation, and the power icon will turn off.
Note: You can remove the carafe from the platform during the brewing process for approximately 30 seconds to pour a cup before brewing is finished.
  8. After brewing is finished there could still be hot water in the filter holder passing through the ground coffee. This can take 1 to 3 minutes depending on how much coffee and how fine the coffee was ground. Wait until all brewed coffee is in the carafe before serving.
  9. When the brewing is finished, the machine will keep the heating plate hot for 2 hours before automatically shutting off. To turn machine off after brewing press the ON/OFF button again until the power icon light turns off. For optimum coffee taste, serve coffee just after brewing.
  10. If you want to make another carafe of coffee immediately after the first pot, make sure the machine is off and allow it to cool down for three minutes before refilling the water tank.
Important: Make sure the carafe is empty before brewing.
  11. Always turn the coffee maker off and unplug the power cord from the electrical outlet when the coffee maker is not in use.
Important: Always use caution when opening the lid directly after brewing, or when the heating plate is on. Hot steam can rise from inside the machine and cause injury if contact with skin is made.

Brewing Small Amounts of Coffee

When brewing small amounts of coffee push the 1-4 cup button (Fig. 2, K) until the icon illuminates on the display. Then push the ON/OFF button to start brewing. The brewing process will be slowed down to allow the coffee to reach its maximum aroma. If you pushed the 1-4 cup button by mistake, push it again to turn off this function.

Setting Auto-On

If you want the coffee maker to start brewing at a preset time automatically, first set the auto-on time by pushing the PROG button (Fig. 2, M). The display shows “6:00 AM”. Push the HR and MIN buttons until the desired auto-on time appears.
Within a few seconds the display will revert to the actual time. You may check the auto-on time by pressing the PROG button.
Note: You may cancel the auto-on function by pressing the AUTO button again until the icon disappears from the display. If you want to change the automatic start time, follow the steps above to reset.
Once the programed time is set, fill the water tank and filter and place the empty carafe with the closed lid on the platform. Push the AUTO button (Fig. 2, P) until the auto-on icon appears on the display. When the time is due the auto-on icon will go out, while the power icon will illuminate and the unit will start brewing.
During keep warm mode the power icon will remain illuminated to let you know that the heating plate is on.
Hint: If you want your coffee at 7:15 AM, set the programmed time to 7:00 (15 minutes earlier). This provides the freshest and hottest coffee possible.

Attention:

  • If the machine is unplugged or power is interrupted, all settings described above must be reset.
  • If the machine was set to auto-on and power was interrupted, the machine will not brew coffee at the programmed time.

Charcoal Filter

This machine comes with one charcoal filter and a charcoal filter holder. You can brew coffee with or without the water filtration system. Remove the charcoal filter from polybag. Soak the filter in a glass with cold water for a few minutes. This will activate the filter. Open the water container lid and remove the charcoal filter holder. Insert the charcoal filter into the included charcoal filter holder (Fig. 5) and snap charcoal filter holder closed. Once the charcoal filter is secure, insert the filter holder down into the designated area inside the water tank (Fig. 3). The machine will automatically monitor the progress of the filter, and the illuminated filter icon will appear when it is time to change the filter. When the filter icon is displayed, remove the charcoal filter holder and replace the charcoal filter. Insert the charcoal filter holder back into the water tank. Push and hold the filter button until the filter icon disappears. The filter counter is now reset. Replacement charcoal filters can be purchased through the website.
IMPORTANT: Do not use charcoal filter for longer than recommended. Change the charcoal filter as advised for best tasting coffee.

Cleaning the Coffee Maker

  • Turn machine off. Always unplug the appliance from the outlet and allow to cool down before cleaning.
  • Never use scouring agents.
  • Never immerse the appliance in water or any other liquid or clean under running water. To clean the appliance, wipe off with a soft, damp cloth.
  • Dishwasher safe (upper rack) are: filter holder, GoldTone filter, glass carafe.
  • Clean the GoldTone filter after every use. Otherwise coffee oils will form and clog the small filter openings. Old, hardened coffee oils can spoil the taste of your coffee.
  • Clean the lid of the carafe under running water.
  • Drip-stop in filter holder: make sure that the drip-stop is free of any coffee particles or it might not close properly when removing the carafe.

Decalcifying

Decalcify at least every 2-4 months depending on local water hardness or when brewing twelve cups takes more than 15 minutes.

  • Remove the GoldTone filter and the charcoal filter from the machine.
  • Dissolve 1 oz (28 g) of Capresso Cleaning Solution (or other descaling agent) with 32 oz (1, L) of water and pour mixture into water tank.
  • Place the empty carafe with the lid closed underneath the filter holder.
  • Turn the machine on for 2 minutes.
  • Turn machine off and let sit for 15 minutes.
  • Turn machine on again and let the remaining Cleaning Solution pass through.
  • Turn the coffee maker OFF (Fig. 2, J), remove the carafe, empty and rinse a few times with fresh cold water.
  • Rinse the filter holder thoroughly with fresh water.
  • Let the coffee maker cool down for a few minutes.
  • Fill water tank with fresh cold water and brew through machine to fully rinse.
  • Turn off coffee maker and empty carafe.

Troubleshooting – What to do if…

  • …Coffee drips from the filter, when the carafe is removed.
    • Ground coffee sits in the drip stop and does not allow the drip stop to close properly. Immediately replace the carafe and wait until all the coffee has been filtered in the carafe. Now remove carafe and remove the filter holder.
Clean filter holder under running water. Push the drip stop several times to remove coffee particles. Over the sink fill some water into the filter holder and check if the drip stop closes properly.
  • …Ground coffee is flowing over the GoldTone filter.
    • Coffee is ground too fine.
    • Use less ground coffee. Do not exceed 14 tablespoons in the filter.
    • Use a paper filter (size 4) instead of the GoldTone filter.
